Volleyball in Germany

In Germany, the German Volleyball Association (Deutscher Volleyball-Verband, DVV) is the organization responsible for volleyball. In 2019, it and the 17 regional associations organized 6,693 clubs with around 8,000 teams in men's, women's, and A and B youth divisions. Most teams, 1,702, are in North Rhine-Westphalia under the WVV.

The DVV organizes volleyball in Germany.

According to the 2019 survey by the German Olympic Sports Confederation (retrieved on February 28, 2020), the DVV, headquartered in Frankfurt am Main, counted 405,461 active volleyball players (about 451,000 in 2013). Including recreational players, around 6 million people play volleyball in Germany.

Since June 2018, the 2.07m tall René Hecht (born 1961), a former national player with 385 appearances, has been president of the DVV.

Despite successes in beach volleyball, such as winning the gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics by the team Julius Brink/Jonas Reckermann, as well as the victory of Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst in Rio de Janeiro 2016, and the current successes of the men’s and women’s indoor national teams, the number of active volleyball players has unfortunately declined in recent years. A new direction for the German Volleyball Bundesliga aims to reverse this trend and inspire more people in Germany to play volleyball. The increased availability of national team and Bundesliga games on TV (sport1) or via streaming (sportdeutschland.tv) is another important step to bring volleyball out of its niche. The goal for volleyball in Germany is to catch up with other team and ball sports like handball, basketball, and tennis in terms of members, sponsors, and attention – although it is unlikely that any sport will ever come close to football’s number one status.

Volleyball in Germany scores with variety

One of volleyball’s greatest strengths is its diversity of variations and its popularity as a school sport among students. Volleyball can be played indoors on a small court as 2v2, 3v3, 4v4, or 6v6 on a large court. In summer or in beach halls, trendy beach volleyball is played, also with various formats. The newest option for playing volleyball in Germany is snow volleyball. Since 2017, there have been German championships and subsequent European titles. So there’s something for everyone.
